Director of Publishing

(NYC)  Respected publisher seeks a new member to join its team to serve as the Director of Publishing of this nonprofit press. The Director of Publishing will provide oversight and management for the press in furthering their mission, pillars and goals.  The successful candidate would demonstrate strategic thinking and implementation skills with a capacity for big picture goal-setting, strategic planning to achieve goals, implementation and organization skill sets, setting and meeting benchmarks, thinking and planning pro-actively, balancing multiple projects concurrently, and setting priorities among many activities

Responsibilities Include:

·         Review and approve proposals in coordination with Chair of Press Council and Chief Executive

·         Provide long-term and short-term strategy for the Press including acquisitions and management

·         Manage proposal and manuscript development

·         Perform hands-on editing when needed

·         Responsible for coordinating and managing the editorial and production processes of all publishing projects including digital adaptation/conversion

·         Manage the departmental structure in order to achieve goals, including supervision of staff and outside contractors/venders

·         Work closely with CFO in managing annual publishing budget

·         Manage and negotiate contracts in coordination with Chief Executive.

 

Requirements/Skills/Experience Include:

·         Significant experience in publishing

·         Experience with both editorial and production processes

·         Interest in developing publishing strategies including acquisitions

·         Familiarity with financial management in publishing (budget management, P & L’s, monitoring and reporting)

·         Strong project management skills required as well as supervisory experience

·         Ability to oversee distribution, fulfillment, inventory

·         Ability to oversee digital publishing

·         Knowledge of Judaism (required)

·         Working knowledge of Hebrew (desired)

·         Knowledge of non-profit world (desired)

·         Ability to work with volunteer advisory committees

·         Ethical foundation in both conduct and qualifications

·         Strong interpersonal skills and relational qualities

·         The ideal candidate would possess leadership skills, the ability to work collaboratively and in partnership with others, as well as the capacity to work well with a range of personalities.
